The squirrels first game of the season saw the boys travel to Bexley Park. With only ten men we knew it would be a tough game. Bexley Park won the toss and decided to bowl first on a green top. Ben and Alfie opened up putting on 19 for the first wicket before Ben (6) gave fielding practice to gully. Alfie was next to go after looking good for his 14. This brought Charles (1) and Jake to the crease. With Charles steadying the ship, Jake looked fluent and started to carve open a tiring opening attack. The rest of the order then batted around Jake with Woodsy (14), Harry Sampson (7*) and Hobbsy (26*) all chipping in. Jake finally went for a superb 89 and really deserved a ton for his efforts. We finished at the halfway stage having scored 178-6 on a tough deck to bat on.
After a cautious start, Bexley Park started to build into their innings with their opener hitting 17 in one over. Woodsy in particular bowled a good opening spell which made up for playing all around a straight slow one when he batted. Harry then bowled his best spell for the squirrels in a couple of years and got respectable figures of 2-28. Kev’s come back spell (final figures of 2-28) was awesome too and brought us back into the game with Alfie (1-34) getting an important wicket too. The final 5 overs saw Bexley needing 34 to win. Jake (1-37) and Woodsy (3-17) bowled quite brilliantly at the end and saw the squirrels home for our first win of the season to cap an eventful day to say the least with the squirrels winning by 6 runs.
