Sunday saw the squirrels travel to the second premier league ground in two weeks as we took on Blackheath. After another win of the toss, the skipper chose to bat first on what looked like a cracking deck for batting.
Charles (21) and debutant Vinay (8) opened up well against a decent looking opening attack before both getting out to a slower ball.
This brought Howesy (10) and Hobbsy (102 retired not out) to the crease. Howesy was looking good until chopping on to his own stumps. Min (17) then joined the skip and the pair put on 89 for the 4th wicket, with the skip going through the gears once hitting his 50 and riding his luck at times.
Russ (15) also batted well and looked like a man who has been playing all year rather than just in his second game of the season and would of had more runs under his belt if his running partner could move better.
It was left to Neil (40*) and Kev (9-1) to help the squirrels finish on an about par 240. Neil in particular looked like a man in great form and ready to end the season well.
After a lovely lunch (and plenty of chicken for some), the squirrels took to the field. Ben had such a good tea he decided to take most of his wrap with him on his trousers.
Himanshu (2-42) and Ben (1-48) both struck early as Lamorbey made early inroads. However it was clear the oppo had a strong batting line up, with their number 4 hitting 16 off his first three balls faced.
Vinay (1-31), Kev (1-15) and Harry S (3-25) then turned the game in the favour of the squirrels. Harry bowled a spell that had the crowd in awe and which cemented his spot as the leading wicket taker of the season to date.
We then let the game slip a bit and dropped catches hurt us as the oppo’s middle order started to punish a team who were one short just after the drinks break.
Min (1-28), Charles (0-15) and Russ (0-24) all could have had more luck on another day.
With the game seemingly going Blackheath’s way, Harry and Vinay made important breakthroughs and then the oppo became even more nervy as Howesy took a quite incredible stumping off the bowling of Himanshu down the leg side.
The final two batters then scrambled a run to win a superb game of cricket which was enjoyed by all and we hope to play Blackheath again next year as we had an enjoyable day, even if we didn’t quite get over the line.
