Sunday saw the squirrels travel to Sidcup to play Blue Star. After tactically losing the toss, the skipper was asked to bat first on what looked like an absolute road for batting.
The new look opening pair of Min (18) and Charles (23) got the squirrels off to a flying start, punishing anything short with disdain and saw the squirrels to 48 before both losing their wickets.
This brought Jake (81) and Neil (71*) to the crease and from their first balls, they were confident with their shots and smashed the ball to all parts of the ground, hardly giving a chance to the oppo as they racked up a huge partnership of 126. Neil’s 71* was his first fifty for the club and his innings oozed class mixed with finding the gap at ease. He did however, harshly run Vishal out, which was something that at the fines meeting afterwards was not forgotten.
Special mention to Jake whilst umpiring to. He did something that I have never seen before and received a nasty injury to the lower abdomen area whilst waiting for the bowler to realase the ball and bowl, only for the ball to go backwards and ending up in Jake’s midrift area.
The squirrels set Blue Star 219 to win. From the start of the innings, it was clear the score was going to be hard to achieve with Himanshu (1-17) and Ben W(1-13) setting high standards from the start and bowling lovely areas.
Club legend Rob Allen then showed what the players had been missing out on and got a fantastic run out from mid on, throwing a precise throw to the grateful Jake and leaving the batsman well out of their crease.
Rob (2-26) then rolled back the years and with his coach (A. Martin) cheering on his every ball, getting good rhythm the more he bowled and showing there is plenty more left in the tank.
Vishal (1-32) and Harry S (3-28) also took wickets with the latter getting confused what a six was. Harry’s mind may of been all over the place as the lower order batsman who was rocking jogging bottoms and blue espadrilles, took advantage of a long hop and hit the ball at least 15 metres over the boundary, only for H to plead with the umpire to give it as a 4.
Well done to Nimish who should of had a wicket on his debut and looked solid with the bat. Min is proving a good addition to the squirrels also, especially as he knows how to catch and finished with two catches and a run out.
We won by 79 runs in the end with a comfortable victory which was our first of the season.
Player of the match - Neil Alsemgeest
