Sunday saw the squirrels travel to their old stomping ground at Footscray Rugby Club as we took on Eltham Cricket Club.
After the mandatory toss loss……… Hang on a minute, let me start again. After the skipper won his first toss of the season, LPCC batted first on a deck that looked like it could do a bit from the off.
After Charles (5) and Tom (7) went early, the skipper (44) and Min (69) dug in, with Min in particular showing that time at the crease brings form and after a slow start, showed what a class bat he is and cruised to his first 50 of many for the club.
After the skip went, wickets tumbled but unselfish batting and good running between the wickets saw the squirrels post what looked like a decent total of 156-8 from their 40 overs. Well done to Lloyd also who decided one journey to the game wasn’t enough and went home to get his kit he left behind, missing the skip finally win the toss.
Eltham got off to flying start, smashing anything over pitched and it was looking ominous for the squirrels before Himanshu (1-19) got the ball to talk and removed Eltham’s dangerous opener.
Harry Sampson (1-15) and Kev (2-25) then turned the screws even more, bowling superbly in tandem and showed great skills and discipline in their bowling. Harry appeared so confident that at one point, he decided to escort the ball the boundary, with Kev looking completely baffled as to why it wasn’t stopped.
It was then left to Charles (2-12), Brian (1-15) and Ben (2-29) to finish off proceedings as we bowled Eltham out for 116. Congratulations to Brian on his first wicket for the club and well done to Ben as well, showing great character in his second spell and also getting a crucial run out. As always, Howesy kept with class, standing up to everyone on another tricky deck for keeping.
Player of the match - Min “let’s turn twos into 3’s” Mann
Fine of the day - Lloyd “it wasn’t my fault I forgot my kit Barnett”
