Sunday saw the squirrels take the long journey to Fordcombe in the deep countryside of Tunbridge Wells. After the skipper surprisingly lost the toss with Woodsy’s dodgy coin, Lamorbey Park CC were asked to bowl first.
Woodsy (2-26) and Sen (0-27) opened up with Woodsy striking early and bowling with good pace and aggression on a slightly two paced pitch. Charles (1-29) came into the attack early and bowled well in tandem with Harry Sampson (1-25) keeping the score down on a rapid outfield.
Without doubt though the game changed when Daisy Hobbs who was making history playing in her debut adult cricket match was given the nod to bowl by her proud uncle.
After a nervous start, Daisy got into her stride and considering she hadn’t bowled in a game for 3 years, she got more confident with each over. She then struck her first wicket with Woodsy taking a good catch in the deep. It wasn’t long before Daisy got her second wicket with the plumbest lbw in the history of village cricket. The youngest Hobbs on the pitch finished with fine figures of 5 overs, 2-21.
Special mention to Cam (0-29) and Oscar (0-31) who bowled some tough overs at the end of the innings and deserved a wicket or 2 each. The squirrels were set 195 to win.
After taking less than 9 minutes to get padded up (a squirrels club record), Lloyd and Alfie strolled to the crease hoping to get the lads off to flier. Lloyd (8), Alfie (4) and Sen (5) all went early.
Woodsy and the skipper Hobbsy then started to rebuild with Woodsy looking the more fluent of the two, smashing anything over pitched or short with disdain.
Woodsy started to grow with confidence and with every boundary he scored, his chest started to stick out more like a peacock aware that it’s his show and no one else’s.
After a solid partnership of 90 odd, Hobbsy (39) got cleaned up by the high full toss. Woodsy continued to torment the opposition but couldn’t quite finish it off, however made a splendid 93.
The chase was then finished off by the ever reliable Howesy (12*) and Charles (14*) securing the victory in the penultimate over and rounding off a fine all round display by the squirrels.
The day belonged to Daisy though, who made club history by becoming the first female to play for the club and rightly received the player of the match for her fantastic spell of bowling.
