Sunday saw the squirrels travel to the picturesque Four Elms and saw us take on a team unbeaten on Sundays this season. After winning his fourth toss in a row, the skipper opted to bat first on what looked like a good deck for batting.
Lloyd (3) and Min (47) opened up against a strong opening attack and it was clear from the off, it was going to be a tough game. After Lloyd went, Jake (109*) came to the crease and immediately picked up the scoring.
What he wasn’t ready for was the sprinting between wickets from Min who was turning ones into twos and twos into threes at ease and both picked up the tempo, but also dispatching anything short or over pitched.
After a stand of 54, Min fell short of a well deserved 50. The skipper (48*) then clothed his first 20 runs, whilst enjoying watching Jake batter the bowling to every part of the ground, in an innings that showed what a class act he really is. He also connected with a reverse ramp towards the end as he put on an unbroken stand 130 with the skipper as the squirrels made a respectable 218-2 from their 35 overs.
It was apparent from the off that four elms were going be a hard team to beat as they got off to a fluent start with Charles (1-40) taking the only early wicket but was well supported by George (1-20) who bowled with great control in his first spell.
With the oppo needing around 70-80 from the last 10 overs, it was looking ominous for the Park with two set batsman seemingly strolling towards the target.
George then bowled a two over spell that got us back in it, taking the key wicket of the opener. It was then left to Min (0-28), Harry (3-53) and Jake (2-35) to get us back into it.
Four Elms needed 17 to win off the last over and fell 6 short of the target, with Jake fittingly ending the innings by rearranging the batter’s furniture off the last ball of the game.
Without doubt, it was one of the best games I have played in for the squirrels. Superb fielding from Neil, Tom, Alf and Min and with Howesy being as immense as ever behind the stumps, helped us seal the win.
