Sunday saw the squirrels to travel to the picturesque Four Elms on a day that looked good for batting.
Unfortunately, during the week, we received devastating news that one of our former players John Cole sadly passed away. We were joined by the opposition in holding a minute’s silence for JC before the game started. Our thoughts go out to John’s family and friends at this difficult time.
The skipper won the toss and opted to bat first with 200 looking a par score. Lloyd (9) and Alfie (9) got off to a subdued start before woodsy (35) again looked like a man in serious form punishing anything over pitched. Neil also looked good for his 13
Woodsy did however, run Lloydy out trying to nick a quick single that even Johnny Bairstow would have struggled to of made.
The skipper Hobbsy (50-3) then helped himself to some ordinary bowling, although in truth should have pushed on and been there at the end. Kev (14*) also looked solid at the end.
Some ordinary batting, mixed with some decent wicket taking deliveries from Four Elms, saw the squirrels post a below par 161.
After several of the boys loading up with macaroni cheese balls and large slices of country cake, the squirrels took to the field. When the skipper tried setting the field, he realised Neil and Harry S were missing and we eventually caught up with them having a nanny chat in the changing room, with no intention of entering the field of play.
Woodsy (0-21) and Sen (1-38) opened the bowling and were a bit unlucky with the new peel. Especially Sen who drew the edge from one of the openers, which was well taken by Howesy, only for him not to walk or be given out.
Jake (3-33), Harry S (0-39) and Kev (2-29) did their best to get the squirrels back into the the game, but in truth we were 30-40 runs short and Four Elms made the target with four wickets in hand.
A bit more patience with the bat and a bit more accuracy with the ball next week should hopefully get us back to winning ways.
Well done to Mat Cowell on his official debut who was excellent in the field and thanks to Andy Martin for doing a great job umpiring.
