The squirrels travelled to New Ifield on Sunday. After the mandatory loss of the toss by the captain, Lamorbey were asked to field first on what looked initially to be a nice looking deck.
It quickly became apparent that pitch was awful at best with Sen (2-23) and Harry Ford (3-35) getting the ball to spit on a good length and then keep low with the odd short ball.
After early wickets, it looked possible that a low score was on the cards but the opposition’s number 3 showed resistance and punished anything loose. Woodsy (1-14), Charles (0-17) and Jake (3-5) all bowled well keeping the run rate down in the middle overs.
Charles also fielded well off his own bowling. At one point the ball was smashed back at him with venom, for Charles to stop the ball with his body. However, this made a tinny sound and had the slip cordon gossiping on what he had in his pocket. Was it his phone, keys or perhaps even his wallet? No, in fact, it was his lunch, which was a small pot full of mixed nuts and brought many chuckles to the team.
Harry Sampson (0-21) and Kev (0-30) both bowled well at the end and the squirrels were set a challenging 153 for victory. Again, Howesy kept exceptionally on probably the worst deck we have played on for several years.
The chase started well with Lloyd (21) and Alfie (11) putting on 29 for the first wicket, with Lloyd in particular looking to punish anything over pitched.
Woodsy (13) also contributed with a patient knock before getting out to a half decent ball and causing wild celebrations from the oppo.
At 61-3, it was down to Hobbsy and Jake to knuckle down and try and work out the best way to deal with a spicy pitch. Jake decided early in his innings to change his Poundland bat he borrowed from woodsy which paid dividends as he got straight into his groove and targeted the short boundary, finding it with ease.
The skipper also had a good day, latching onto anything short. Both Jake and Hobbsy finished on 54* as the squirrels won their third game of the season with another solid performance.
Man of the match - Jake
Fine of the day - Charles
