Sunday saw the squirrels travel to Tonbridge. After winning the toss for the first time in 8 attempts, a surprised Hobbsy chose to bat first on what looked to be a decent track for batting.
Lloyd (11) and debutant Chris Wiseman (40) got the team off to flier, which included Lloyd arguably playing the shot of his career, cracking a square cut that flew to the boundary and had his team mates in slight shock, that it took 69 years to play the shot of his life.
Wiseo was in fine nick also, looking to attack anything wide and short and deserved a 50 for his efforts.
The middle order then clicked also with Woodsy (67-8), Howesy (15), Hobbsy (37) and Charles (13) all looking to be aggressive where possible.
The moment of the innings though had to be seeing the returning ex captain Tim Morgan (6*) stroll to the crease, permanently smiling to be back on a cricket field again. When politely asked by the skipper to start trying to swing a bit more with a few overs to go, he answered with a grin “skip I am trying, but I just don’t have those sort of shots in my armoury”. The next ball he came walking down the pitch with intent and tried flicking the returning opening bowler over the clubhouse whilst on one leg, only to smashed straight in his padded abdomen area causing eruptions of laughter that could probably be heard many miles away.
A quick cameo from Harry Sampson (6) saw the squirrels post a fine 226-7
The Tonbridge openers got off to a subdued start off the tight bowling off Sen (2-34), Charles (0-19) and Oscar (2-42) and at the halfway stage had just over 60 runs on the board. Oscar was the stand out bowler in the first 20 overs, bowing with great accuracy.
The Tonbridge gents then upped their scoring, with Daisy (0-41), Woodsy (3-31) and Harry Sampson (1-46) bowling the latter overs. Unfortunately there was an extreme amount of poor fielding that in truth, ruined some of the team’s bowing figures, but again Daisy should be proud of her efforts against some good batters.
The moment of joy in the field came to all the squirrels (other than Hobbsy) when the skipper lost his footing whilst trying to stop the slow moving ball coming towards him and tumbled to floor into a heap.
With three overs left, Tonbridge only needed 23 to win. It was left for Sen to show how cool he was under pressure, coming back to bowl his last two overs and with the help of a good over from woodsy, the opponents needed six to win off Sen’s final over.
Sen then quite calmly bowled an unbelievable over, taking a wicket and conceding only two runs to see his team win another nail biter by 4 runs. It was pleasing to see and Sen can take confidence from his fine performance.
Special mention again to Howesy also who took some important stumpings and catches at crucial parts of the game.
